Effect of Polyester Yarn Fineness on Fabric Roughness

Akgun M. Journal of Engineered Fibers and Fabrics, 2015, 10(2), 155892501501000214.

The impact of weft filament size on the surface texture of polyester yarn woven fabrics was examined by analyzing various fabric structural features. The experimental results show that the fabric with finer filaments has a compact structure, which reduces the difference between the high and low peaks on the fabric surface, thereby reducing the fabric surface roughness.
Preparation of experimental materials
· The fabric surface roughness values were analyzed in relation to filament fineness for two different groups of fabrics.
· In the first group, the warp yarns consisted of 70/36 denier/filament textured (intermingled) yarns (with 110 intermingled points per meter) and were woven to create fabrics with a density of 60 threads/cm. The second group had warp yarns made of 150/36 denier/filament spun (350 Turns/meter, Z) yarns, resulting in fabrics with a density of 35 threads/cm. Both groups used textured (non-intermingled) polyester yarns for the weft. The weft yarn properties varied within each subgroup, including differences in weft yarn count, filament fineness/numbers, and density.
· Following weaving, the fabrics were pre-treated by washing with a non-ionic agent (2 g/L) at 60 °C for 30 minutes, and then stentered without tension at 180°C for 60 seconds, in mill conditions. They were later prepared for roughness measurement under laboratory conditions with a temperature of 20±2 °C and relative humidity of 65±2%.
