Sepiolite Fiber

Sepiolite fiber is a natural mineral fiber, a fibrous variant of the mineral Sepiolite, called α-Sepiolite. It has a unique fibrous structure that lends itself well to a variety of industrial applications. Alfa Chemistry offers sepiolite fiber products to meet specific needs.

Introduction

Sepiolite fiber is derived from sepiolite mineral. Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich silicate fiber mineral with a theoretical chemical formula of Mg8[Si12O30](OH)4 ·12H2O. Four of the water molecules are crystal water, and the rest are zeolite water and often contains a small amount of manganese, chromium and other elements. It is reported that sepiolite is a layered silicate mineral with a layer of magnesium octahedron sandwiched between two layers of silicon-oxygen tetrahedrons in the structure, forming a 2:1 type layered structural unit. Its tetrahedral layer is continuous, and the direction of active oxygen in the layer is reversed periodically. The octahedral layer forms a channel with alternating upper and lower layers. The orientation of the channel is consistent with the fiber axis, allowing water molecules, metal cations, organic small molecules, etc. to enter it. Sepiolite fiber is known for its high tensile strength, flexibility, and thermal stability, making it an ideal material for use in a wide range of applications including construction and automotive industries. And it is lightweight and has a low density, making it an excellent choice for lightweight composites and insulation materials. Sepiolite fiber is also highly absorbent and has excellent thermal insulation properties, making it a popular choice for use in high-temperature applications. Additionally, sepiolite fiber is non-toxic, non-irritating, and environmentally friendly, making it a desirable material for use in various industries.

Applications

Sepiolite fiber is a versatile material with a wide range of applications across various industries due to its unique properties and benefits. Some of the common applications of sepiolite fiber include:

  • Adsorbent materials. Sepiolite fiber is commonly used as an adsorbent material due to its high surface area and porosity, which allow it to absorb and retain liquids and gases. It is often used in the filtration of water, oil, and other liquids, as well as in the removal of pollutants and contaminants from air and water.
  • Insulation materials. Sepiolite fiber is known for its thermal insulation, heat preservation and high temperature resistance properties, making it a popular choice for insulation materials in various industries. In the field of construction, sepiolite fiber is widely used in the insulation and heat insulation of building walls, ceilings, chimneys, furnace walls, kilns, high-temperature pipelines and other parts. Sepiolite fiber is also used as lining insulation for neutral tanks, storage tanks, and insulation for containers and pipelines in the petroleum and chemical industries. In addition, sepiolite fiber is also widely used in the fields of electricity, medicine, food processing, such as thermal insulation of electric furnaces, ovens, fresh-keeping boxes, food processing equipment, etc.
  • Reinforcing agent. Sepiolite fiber is used as a reinforcing agent in the manufacturing of composite materials, such as plastics, rubber, and ceramics. It enhances the mechanical strength, stiffness, and durability of the final product.
