Basalt Fiber

Basalt fiber is a continuous fiber drawn from natural basalt. Basalt continuous fiber not only has high strength, but also has many excellent properties such as electrical insulation, corrosion resistance, and high temperature resistance. As a fiber material solution provider, Alfa Chemistry provides basalt fiber products to meet specific needs.

Chemical Composition And Function

The content of the main components of basalt fiber is shown in the following table.

ComponentsSiO2Al2O3CaO+MgOFexOyNa2O+K2OTiO2
Content (mass fraction)46%-52%10%-18%13%-25%6%-18%2%-10%1.5%-2%

The functions of each component of basalt fiber are shown in the following table.

ComponentsFunction
SiO2, Al2O3Improve the chemical stability of the fiber and the viscosity of the melt
FexOyIncrease the use temperature of the fiber
CaO, MgOIncrease the chemical stability of the fiber, the surface tension and viscosity of the melt
TiO2Belong to the category of additives, which is conducive to the melting of raw materials and the production of fine fibers

Performances

  • High strength. The strength of basalt fiber is comparable to that of high-strength S-type glass fiber, and can even be comparable to T300 carbon fiber. Importantly, its cost is lower and it is regarded as an economical alternative to carbon fiber.
  • Electrical insulation and corrosion resistance. Basalt fiber has good electrical insulation and corrosion resistance, and can remain stable in extreme environments.
  • High temperature resistance. The melting point of basalt fiber can reach above 1200 ℃, which is much higher than that of ordinary fiber materials, and has outstanding high temperature resistance.
  • Flame retardant property. Since basalt fiber does not contain organic matter in its composition, and has high density and poor thermal conductivity, it has good flame retardant properties.
  • Thermal insulation property. Basalt fiber has extremely low thermal conductivity, which can effectively isolate heat transfer, so it is widely used in the fields of construction and aerospace.
  • Environmental protection. The production process of basalt fiber determines that less waste is generated, less pollution to the environment, and the product can be directly degraded in the environment after being discarded without any harm.

Applications

  • Automotive industry. Basalt fiber is used in the manufacturing of automotive parts and components such as body panels, chassis parts, and interior trims due to its lightweight and high strength properties.
  • Construction industry. Basalt fiber can be made into high-strength concrete reinforcement to strengthen and reinforce concrete structures such as bridges, roads and buildings, and improve seismic resistance, durability and corrosion resistance.
  • Aerospace industry. Basalt fiber composites are used to manufacture lightweight, high-strength components for aircraft and spacecraft. These materials help reduce weight and increase fuel efficiency.
  • Sporting goods. Basalt fiber is incorporated into the production of sporting goods such as tennis rackets, bicycles, skis, and surfboards due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and flexibility.
  • Marine industry. Basalt fiber is used in the manufacturing of boats, yachts, and other marine vessels for its resistance to saltwater corrosion and durability against harsh marine environments.

Basalt fiber offers a versatile and sustainable alternative to traditional materials in various fields, providing enhanced performance and durability benefits.
