Wollastonite Fiber

Wollastonite fiber is a type of inorganic mineral fiber that is derived from the calcium silicate mineral wollastonite. Alfa Chemistry offers wollastonite fiber products to meet specific needs.

Introduction

Wollastonite, with the main component of Ca3Si3O9, is a kind of flake, needle or fiber crystal with good hardness, brittle texture and glassy luster. Wollastonite fiber is one of the products obtained by processing wollastonite, with good thermal stability, chemical corrosion resistance, insulation and other characteristics. It can partially replace traditional glass fiber and is widely used in construction materials, automobiles and other fields.

Performances

  • High heat resistance. Wollastonite fiber exhibits exceptional heat resistance, making it ideal for applications where high temperatures are involved. It can withstand temperatures of up to 1200 ℃ without degrading.
  • Low thermal conductivity. Wollastonite fiber has low thermal conductivity, which makes it a good insulating material. It can be used in thermal insulation products to reduce heat transfer and improve energy efficiency in buildings, industrial equipment, and appliances.
  • High aspect ratio. Wollastonite fiber has a high aspect ratio, which means that it has a high length-to-diameter ratio. This property makes it effective in enhancing the mechanical properties of composite materials, such as improving tensile strength, stiffness, and impact resistance.
  • Chemical inertness. Wollastonite fiber is chemically inert, meaning it is resistant to most chemicals, acids, and alkalis. This property allows it to be used in corrosive environments and applications where exposure to chemicals is a concern.
  • Low density. Wollastonite fiber has a low density, making it lightweight and easy to handle. This property is advantageous in applications where weight reduction is desired, such as in automotive and aerospace components.
  • Abrasion resistance. Wollastonite fiber exhibits good abrasion resistance, making it suitable for use in wear-resistant materials, such as brake pads, clutch facings, and ceramic coatings.

Applications

Wollastonite fiber is a versatile material with a wide range of applications due to its unique properties. Some of the most common applications of wollastonite fiber include:

  • Construction materials. Wollastonite fiber is incorporated into cement, concrete, and other construction materials to enhance their strength, durability, and fire resistance. It can also improve the thermal and acoustic insulation properties of building materials.
  • Automotive industry. Wollastonite fiber is often used in the production of automotive parts, such as brake pads, clutch facings, sound insulation, bumpers, dashboards, and interior trims, to improve mechanical properties and reduce weight.
  • Fire protection. Wollastonite fiber is also used in fire protection applications due to its ability to withstand high temperatures. It is often incorporated into fireproof materials such as boards, coatings, and textiles to provide added fire resistance.
  • Reinforcing materials in composites. Wollastonite fiber is commonly used as a reinforcing material in composites to enhance their mechanical properties. It can improve the strength, stiffness, and impact resistance of materials such as plastics, rubber, and ceramics.
  • Filtration media. Wollastonite fiber is used in the production of filtration media for air and water purification. Its high porosity and ability to trap particles make it an effective filtration material for removing impurities and contaminants from fluids.
