Performance Evaluation of PLA Filaments for 3D Printing

Matos, Bruna Driussi Mistro, et al. Journal of Thermal Analysis and calorimetry, 2019, 137, 555-562.

This work evaluated the morphological, thermal, and structural properties of several different PLA filaments [PLA-1 (blue), PLA-2 (grey), PLA-3 (transparent), PLA-4 (orange), and PLA-5 (natural)] to determine which filaments might be able to be additively manufactured and functionalized. The study showed that PLA filaments are excellent materials for constructing scaffolds/implants for tissue engineering applications.
Evaluation methods and results
· Through confocal measurements, it was observed that all PLA filaments exhibited a smoother and more uniform appearance post extrusion.
· Analysis of TG/DTG/DTA curves indicated varying thermal stability based on the color of the PLA filaments, while DSC curves and XRD diffractograms provided insights into the crystallinity characteristics of the PLA filaments.
· Utilizing an oscillatory rheometer, it was noted that all samples initially displayed Newtonian behavior at lower frequencies, transitioning to pseudoplastic behavior at higher frequencies.
· The PLA-1 sample demonstrated higher molar mass and a narrower molar mass distribution compared to the other sample. Variations in crystallinity, crystallite size, enthalpy, temperature of crystallization and melting, chain size, and polydispersity of PLA influenced their thermal stability. These distinctions in filament behavior may suggest the need for different parameters when utilizing 3D printers for printing.
