Structure
Description Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) is an ether of cellulose. It presents as a white to light creamy powder. It is formed when some of the hydroxyl groups in consecutive glucose units are hydroxypropylated. Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) is biocompatible in nature and exhibits a lower critical solution temperature (LCST). It is prepared by reacting cellulose with alkali to generate alkali cellulose, and then continuously reacting with propylene oxide. HPC is soluble in water, the solubility is lower than room temperature, and the viscosity is inversely proportional to the temperature. Hydroxypropyl cellulose is mainly used as an ingredient in pharmaceutical products, and care must be taken to avoid corrosion of process vessels during production.
