Effect of the Structure of Single-Component Chitosan Fiber on Its Performance

Single-component chitosan fiber is superior to chitosan-modified cotton/wool/chemical fiber in terms of comfort, washability, wear resistance and structural flexibility. Molecular weight (Mw) and degree of deacetylation (DD) are two main quality indicators of chitosan substances. In this work, fiber structure and its performance influence is shown through analysis of the properties of single-component chitosan fiber. These are the precise findings:
· The highest deacetylated chitosan fiber was also more mechanically strong and antimicrobial, but poorly elongated, with less softness and feel.
· Chitosan fiber with a higher DD has a better antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans, while chitosan in solution form has no such relationship, indicating that there is a difference in the antibacterial mechanism of chitosan in fiber (solid) form and solution form.
