Description Carbon nanotube fibers have moderate to high strengths. Also, they possess good electrical conductivity and very low density. Due to these properties, carbon nanotube fibers can be integrated into fabrics and composites. Their area of usage involves their use as stand-alone or embedded sensors. Moreover, their high strength, stiffness, thermal and electrical conductivity enable their use as functional reinforcements in composite materials, in active heating/cooling systems, electrical conductivity/EMI shielding mechanisms such as CNT/epoxy composites and in atmospheric anti-threat detection in UAVs.

Application of Carbon Nanotube Fibers in Advanced Composites

Carbon nanotube fibers (CNFs) have high specific strength, stiffness, electrical and thermal conductivity, and extremely high flexibility. CNF fibers can be used not only as structural reinforcements, but also as independent or embedded strain/damage, thermal, atmospheric, and biochemical sensors.
Development of CNF composites
· Zu et al. partially infiltrated CNT fibers with epoxy droplets, resulting in a dry CNT core surrounded by a partially wetted interfacial layer. Based on the interfacial shear strength experiment, the interfacial shear strength between the resin/CNT interfacial layer and the CNT fiber core was measured, and its effective interfacial shear strength was 14.4 MPa.
· Fiber Infusion: In epoxy-infused CNT fiber arrays, the polymer penetrates between the nanotube bundles, but not between the nanotubes that form the bundles. Therefore, creating functional groups to promote chemical bonding between the polymer resin and individual CNTs has proven successful in producing composite fibers.
