3D Printing Method and Parameter Optimization of ABS Filament

This work examined the effects of printing temperature and infill density on 3D printing of ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) filaments via FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) technology. The aim of the study was to optimize the 3D printing technology of ABS to reduce the weight and printing time of electric vehicle seats.
Experimental Design
Tensile tests were performed on 3D printed ABS samples. A range of samples included the following parameters - printing temperature (230°C and 260°C - minimum and maximum allowed temperature) and infill density (10%, 25%, 50% and 100%). The infill pattern adopted was honeycomb as it has higher tensile strength than the lattice pattern.
Key Findings
· A lower printing temperature yields improved tensile strength for a given filament, particularly at lower infill densities, where the advantage of using a lower temperature is approximately 4%.
· The honeycomb infill pattern achieves significantly higher tensile strength values compared to the lattice infill pattern, with a maximum stress increase of about 50%.
· When the infill density is 50% or higher, Young's modulus exceeds that of unprocessed filament (314 MPa versus 342 MPa).
· The lower Young's modulus and maximum stress values listed in the material datasheet may result from the cooling rate applied during printing.
· Utilizing full infill can enhance tensile strength by up to 51% compared to an infill density of 50%.
· A 25% infill results in only a 12% decrease in tensile strength relative to a 50% infill.
· Printing with a honeycomb infill pattern can extend the printing time by nearly 45% in some instances.
